The 2012 elections are taking shape as a referendum on the U.S. economy. Which is a very good thing. We’re a decade overdue for a frank national conversation about American innovation in the twenty-first century.

The most important part of this conversation is what to do about the decline of American manufacturing. The conventional wisdom is that a large-scale shift from manufacturing jobs to service industry jobs is inevitable. But this is a self-fulfilling prophesy, and a damaging one.
